Hi, I'm Kellan (or Kel) and I'm a videographer and filmmaker based in New York City and Philadelphia! Originally from New York, I've been a professional videographer since 2012, but picked it up in 2004 when I would go into Manhattan on the weekends and document my trips with friends, mostly over at the TV show Saturday Night Live.  When my dad died in 2005 those home movies he had of us together became so valuable to me and a prime source of inspiration to my career path.

I grew up on the comedy scene in NYC and became the resident videographer for Seth Herzog's show 'Sweet' in 2012 until 2017 and shows here and there from 2018 onward. In 2014, I also did Zog's wedding video and that's when I discovered I could do this as a real everyday job ....

 THE BASICS.

I'm Kellan Kelly. Middle child; child of tattooed Harley biker parents. 4th Gen New Yorker. Irish Jew-talian. Tattooed (5). Videographer. Filmmaker. Writer. Former dancer. Occasional actor (SVU, The Romanoffs, Orange Is The New Black). Future dog mom whenever I have time. Obsessed with the 'Hamilton' play. Adult coloring book lover. Iced coffee and music for stress relief. Buffalo wings and fries, always. The Office is my comfort show.

                                               PROFESSIONAL.

In 2005, after my father died, our home movies became so valuable to me. It took me until 2007 to actually play them and when I did I bolted out of the room to the bathroom sobbing. I was alone and i think it was the first time I reacted like that since his funeral and that moment sticks with me so vividly. Between 2005 and 2007 I was finishing high school and discovering myself. It was a really hard time for a few reasons but going into manhattan and camping out for Saturday Night Live was my escape. I documented my trips each weekend on my little palm camcorder and collected a bunch of fun footage. On Mondays I would often get asked what was so special about going there so I put footage on my video ipod and would show the highlights. At the time I also created a website for Bill Hader who often collaborated with me in website content and it eventually became popular within the SNL community. I even the opportunity to be in two SNL film productions and photographed for a New York Times article. I would get a lot of questions from fans about the process of going to an SNL taping and what it's like so I decided to make a highlight reel of my footage. It turned out to be 3 minutes and I intended to make it longer but put it on pause.

At the time that I was putting my SNL reel together (2008) and finding its direction, I developed an interest in becoming a documentarian. I met Seth Herzog via UCB Theatre where we would cap an eventful weekend at SNL by seeing some of the cast do improv at the Sunday show Assscat. So basically SNL lead me to UCB which lead me to Zog and that brought me to a whole new area of comedy in New York City. I interviewed Bobby Moynihan and Seth Herzog but became stuck on how I wanted to move forward. I posted Bobby's raw onto my youtube channel and wanted to do more with Zog's. I put it on the back burner and in the fall of 2009 I filmed one of the 'Sweet' shows ironically with Jason Sudeikis and Will Forte co-hosting. It was a bit of a full circle moment. In two days I put together a 90 second teaser out of the interview over the footage. Much like the SNL video, I intended for it to be longer but comparing the two I actually really enjoyed the challenge of packing a story into a short feature like this. From there it became my signature style.

In 2010, I took tickets at the door for Sweet until 2012 when we suddenly lost the videographer. I literally took the train from midtown to lower east side and got asked to shoot the show and ran back uptown to get my camera and trekked back down just before the start and from there I became the resident videographer until 2017. It was such a fun experience where I developed my videography skills and got to see some worldwide names and local favorites come by and perform. During that time I got to work with The Chris Gethard Show, Nerdist, and also did Zog's wedding video which opened up a whole new door for me to take videography to another professional level. Starting in 2018 I started shooting the show again on special occasions and in 2024 we made a documentary on the show's 20th anniversary. It was such a special project to be a part of after being part of the show for 16 years.

It took a while for me to get into wedding videography and I honestly didn't think (and i dont think anyone else thought) it would be my kind of thing but what I love about doing wedding and event videography is that it allows me to consistently work in videography and offering a personal style towards the field.

I want to offer the same sentiment my home movies brought me. I love capturing moments to help turn them into memories for people and not just make a video but actually create a keepsake full of love, laughs, fun, and joyful happy tears.

TIME OF YOUR LIFE (SNL)

TIME OF YOUR LIFE (SNL)

In 2012, I posted a trailer-style documentary of a weekend at SNL called "PROJECT SNL". Ten years later I decided to create a home movie style reel out of the extra footage from 2004-2009. Last summer I was out in New York quite frequently to take care of my childhood home which had sustained some heavy damage. While I did recover many cherished things, there were also a few very important things I didn’t (or couldn’t) recover. Some of those items were my prized essay I wrote during my last year of high school (that I hoped to put up on my portfolio), my late older sister’s belongings, and some of my SNL things. One of the SNL things was the shirt I made during my sports jersey phase that Jimmy adored and signed in 2003 that I would keep in my messenger bag for a couple years as a good luck charm of sorts. What’s crazy though is what did make it out were my photos and videos and I found that to be a pretty interesting connection to this passion for filmmaking that I have discovered for myself. I’ve always had a fondness for home movies especially after losing my dad (obviously) but what I’ve come to realize about why I love them is that in times of darkness and feeling like life is just pointless .. having these and making these little montages out of them has brightened that darkness .. letting me see the brighter parts of life that give it a purpose. I’ve also realized I love capturing life as it is .. from weddings, to live performances, to sharing what I love like being at SNL. It was more than a TV show, it was a community where I started finding myself, my voice, and sort of finding who I was. Contrary to popular belief, I did NOT have a terrible childhood at all, but I did have a difficult childhood in terms of me vs my health that interfered with my opportunities to learn and discover my abilities and interests and growth. My school and my doctors thought they were helping but there was way too much control and micromanagement and Saturday Night Live was my escape .. especially being at it in person. When I started going into NYC on my own I was having an absolute blast and when it became a weekly thing I’d often get asked what was so special about SNL. So I started bringing my little DV camcorder and documenting my trips. I got to see all my favorite bands, be a part of so many great things like ‘Man of The Year’ and ‘Snap Famous’, be in the New York Times article, and doing the website for Bill was such a positive reinforcement and a way to keep me busy which was good for my mental health and my grades at school got so much better. This was one thing my doctors and teachers couldn’t take away from me. By 2008, I wanted to make a documentary on the process of doing snl and after not documenting my trips for a while (thanks to my 2007 depression) I started again but I turned this footage into little music video montages (that I eventually took down, thanks to strict rules around copyrighted music) and then I needed a new camera. When my mom gifted me the canon vixia I wanted for christmas later that year, I took the “work with what you know” advice and tested it out at SNL where I really started getting into this documentary idea now that this camera looked more professional and I think that’s where a serious interest in filmmaking began. I started interviewing fans, took footage each weekend and put together this thing that had been such a huge part of my life for so long and what it looked like through my POV. This became “PROJECT SNL / Life on Standby” and then I became a resident videographer for several years down at Zog’s show ‘Sweet’ where some of the SNL guys were coming down to perform as well. Coincidentally, Sudeikis and Forte were co-hosting the show on my first night filming for Seth. Full circle. During my time with ‘Sweet’ it was PROJECT SNL, along with my similar films “Career Day” and “Solace”, that attracted clients when I started building my wedding video business. So, I just wanted to take an opportunity to share my story here of the very beginning and where it started. Sadly this little tragic moment of losing my stuff is now a part of my story so I wanted to share how absolutely grateful I am to have these memories preserved and how grateful I am to have had this experience as a kid to now be a part of my story as well. I was such a dork back then as this very lost but optimistic, over ambitious, hyped up kid on ADHD adrenaline and antidepressants that just wanted to show love and gratitude towards the things I loved that made me happy and overall have a good time. It was time well spent with wonderful memories and experiences. I’m not exactly where I want/hoped to be in my filmmaking journey but I have a lot to be grateful for and certainly have done more than I ever thought and wouldn’t have gotten this far without this beginning. #billhader #jasonsudeikis #snl #saturdaynightlive #documentary #tbt #tedlasso #believe #barryhbo
SWEET HECKLE

SWEET HECKLE

a day - or rather, night- in the life of a resident videographer at a comedy show. some of my best footage along the way in filming from 2009-2019 and some of my favorite moments in the middle of it. “Sweet Heckle” (ft justin long, chris hardwick, zach galifinakis, nick kroll, questlove, louis ck and John Oliver) … As a filmmaker, I pride myself in capturing candid life events and creating a fun way to look back at them. My filmmaking started out at Saturday Night Live and then I started working with Seth Herzog at his show in 2010 where I became his videographer in 2012. Over the years I developed a large collection of footage of a variety of comics (even folks from SNL, a full circle moment) and within that footage a small collection of funny moments between them, myself and my camera. Last year I made my SNL highlight film of lost footage that I didn’t put in the original, and this year I finished a similar highlight film of my time at Sweet. It was really fun to make and I really enjoyed not only tallying how many times people will stop and point out my camera in ALL of my works 😂 but looking at how much Ive developed over the years from 2009-2019 and how much fun i had doing it. Filmmaking is something I really, truly care about even if I’m having a hard time with it at the moment figuring out what I want to do next and making space for it. I have a lot to figure out in that area. But It’s always something I’m most proud of and I’m so grateful for all the support on it and all the great things I’ve accomplished with it over the last 16/17 years.
